South Dakota Chislic Festival set to return after COVID-19 canceled last year’s event
The South Dakota Chislic Festival is returning this summer after last year’s festival was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The festival in Freeman will return on July 31 for their third year, according to an event post on Facebook.
The inaugural year of the festival in 2018 drew crowds of more than 8,000 people to the city, over four times as many as anticipated.
The feature of the festival is its signature chislic competition where grillmasters go head-to-head to determine who’s chislic is best.
From the results of the the large crowds in year one, changes were made including expanded hours, more vendors and relocation to a larger venue to accommodate guests. The festival saw close to 10,000 attendees in 2019.
The event will be held at the 40-acre Freeman Prairie Arboretum on the Freeman Academy Campus this summer.
Part of the proceeds will help Freeman based non-profits, according to the festival’s website.
