30 days until the S.D. Chislic Festival returns
Make room in your schedule and stomach for the 2021 South Dakota Chislic Festival on Saturday, July 31 at the Prairie Arboretum in Freeman. It will be a chislic-filled day with activities, entertainment, food and beverages for Chislic fans of all ages, running from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. And it is not too late to volunteer and be part of the action. Sign up at sdchislicfestival.com/volunteer. Here are some other things to know: Want to start your festival fun even earlier? Enter the Mutton Run 5K road race (hosted by the Salem Mennonite Home) at 7:30 a.m. for the 8 a.m. race. For more information or to register go to www. salemmonnitehome.om/muttonrun The Kid Zone (hosted by First Church of God in Marion) is back with inflatables and games. Bingo will run throughout the day, along with raffles and drawings. There are 20 different food vendors serving chislic, BBQ, kuchen, ice cream, funnel cakes, cheese curds, cotton candy, kettle corn and more. There are also many vendors to shop with. Historic presentations on the history of chislic and the people who brought it to the region will run throughout the day. Adjacent to the festival grounds, the Heritage Hall Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with admission. Entertainment for all starts at 10:30 a.m. with Uncle Roy and the Boys taking the stage, followed by Sioux Falls Country Tempo, Maggie in the Meantime and The Jim River Band. Mogen’s Heroes returns to close out the evening. Ben’s Brewing Company of Yankton will have their best-selling West Side Park IPA with other craft beer on tap, and the Freeman Fire Department will be serving domestic beer. As always, parking, trolly rides, and admission are free. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the festivities. If you are coming to Freeman on Friday, the Freeman’s Lions Club is holding a BBQ fundraiser from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Freeman Community Center.
